As the Ghana Premier League (GPL) 2025/26 season ignites
passion across the nation, fans, analysts, and clubs seek deeper
insights beyond the traditional points table. The DataPro Super
Index steps into the spotlight, offering a dynamic, data-driven
ranking system tailored exclusively for the GPL.
Inspired by Opta Analyst’s global Elo-based Power Rankings,
DataPro’s Super Index delivers a comprehensive, manual-friendly
framework that captures team vitality through a blend of match
outcomes, attacking prowess, defensive solidity, discipline, and
momentum. In this article, we explain the Super Index’s methodology
and dive into the Game Week 3 standings, reflecting the state of
play as of September 27-28, 2025.
What is the Super Index?
The EA DataPro Super Index is a cumulative, points-based
hierarchical ranking system designed to evaluate the performance of
the GPL’s 18 teams over the course of the season.
Unlike standard league tables that focus solely on wins, draws,
and losses, the Super Index layers multiple performance metrics,
termed “vital points” to reward well rounded excellence and
penalize weaknesses. Updated weekly after each game week (typically
weekends with 9 matches), it builds a running total of vital points
from the season’s start, ensuring that sustained performance shapes
the hierarchy.
The system culminates in a Super Index Scale Ranking, a
normalized 0-100 score (0 = weakest, 100 = strongest) that mirrors
Opta’s global benchmarking but is tailored for the GPL’s unique
dynamics, such as intense home advantages at venues like Baba Yara
Stadium. This makes it accessible for fans and analysts using
simple tools like notebooks or Google Sheets, relying on match data
from sources like GhanaFA.org, Flashscore.com.gh, or Transfer
market.
Core Methodology: Calculating Vital Points
Vital points are calculated weekly and added to a season-long
cumulative total. The components are:
- Match Points (MP): Standard GPL scoring, 3 for a win, 1 for a
draw, 0 for a loss.
- Goal Bonuses/Penalties: +1 point per goal scored in the week
(rewarding attack); -1 per goal conceded (penalizing defense).
Season totals for goals scored and conceded are tracked separately,
but weekly gains are incremental.
- Clean Sheet Bonus (CSB): +0.5 points per clean
sheet (no goals conceded in a match).
- Discipline Penalties (DP): -0.1 per yellow card;
-0.2 per red card, promoting fair play.
- Venue Adjustments (VA): +1 for an away win; +0.5
for an away draw, recognizing the GPL’s strong home
bias.
- Streak Bonus (SB): For unbeaten results (win or draw), +0.3
multiplied by the current unbeaten streak length (resets on loss,
capped at 5 for balance).Weekly Gain = MP + Goal Bonuses/Penalties
+ CSB + DP + VA + SB.
Cumulative Vital Points = Previous Cumulative + Weekly Gain (all
teams start at 0).
As Game Week 4 looms (October 4-5), expect shifts: Kotoko’s home
clash with Lions could skyrocket their Index, while bottom sides
like Berekum need wins to escape negative territory. Follow
